Luxury East Africa Safari: Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar
This itinerary is designed around a simple principle: fewer vehicles, more intimacy, and access to the places and experiences that the busiest sections of the major parks cannot offer. Private conservancies, exclusive camps, and a pace that lets the landscape actually settle in.
Designed by Jennifer Day, our specialist for Africa and Asia, this journey moves through Kenya and Tanzania across sixteen days, with an optional extension to Mnemba Island off Zanzibar.

Day 1
Arrival in Nairobi
After your international flight, you are met on arrival and transferred to a beautifully appointed property that sets the right tone for what follows. This first night is a soft landing: comfortable, unhurried, and a genuine transition from the journey to the safari ahead.

Day 2
Elephant orphanage and Giraffe Manor
The morning begins at an elephant orphanage, where rescued elephant calves are raised and eventually reintegrated into the wild. It is a genuinely moving experience, and one that sets the conservation spirit that runs through the rest of this itinerary.
From here, you continue to the legendary Giraffe Manor, one of Africa's most distinctive properties. The resident herd of Rothschild giraffes visits morning and evening, and afternoon tea with heads appearing at the upstairs windows is exactly as extraordinary as it sounds.
Dinner at the manor rounds out a day that already feels unlike anything else.

Day 3
Breakfast with giraffes, then bush flight to Laikipia
Wake up to giraffes at your balcony. Breakfast with the herd is one of those unhurried mornings that stays with people long after the trip. After time to enjoy the grounds, you transfer to the airport for your bush flight north to Laikipia.
Segera awaits: a luxury retreat set within 50,000 acres of private wild land, with a conservation philosophy woven into every aspect of the experience.

Days 4 - 6
Segera retreat, Laikipia
Three nights at Segera, in the Laikipia plateau of central Kenya. This is one of the most peaceful and beautiful parts of the itinerary, and a significant step away from the busier safari circuits. The conservancy is vast, the wildlife viewing is exceptional, and the sense of being genuinely alone in the African wilderness is something the large national parks simply cannot replicate.
Your time here can include:
Unlimited game drives across the private conservancy
Farm-to-table dining using produce grown on the estate
Spa treatments and yoga with the bush as a backdrop
Guided walks and conservation experiences with the Segera team
Time at the waterhole area, watching wildlife from the comfort of your villa
Segera is one of Jennifer's most recommended properties in Africa. The design is exceptional, the conservation work is genuine, and the level of exclusivity is difficult to match elsewhere in Kenya.

Day 7
Bush flight to the Maasai Mara
A bush flight takes you southwest to the Maasai Mara region and Cottar's 1920s Camp, located in the private Olderkesi Conservancy on the border of the Mara ecosystem and the Serengeti. Positioning here means access to the same wildlife corridors as the main Mara, with a fraction of the vehicles.
Depending on bush flight schedules and routing, an overnight in Nairobi may occasionally be needed between safari sectors. Jennifer handles all logistics and contingencies.

Days 8 - 10
Cottar's 1920s Camp, Maasai Mara
Three nights at Cottar's, one of the finest and most storied camps in Africa. The vintage-style luxury tents are beautifully appointed, the infinity pool is an unexpected pleasure in the middle of the bush, and the game viewing in the private conservancy is consistently outstanding.
Your time here can include:
Unlimited game drives in the Olderkesi Conservancy and the broader Mara ecosystem
A visit to a local Maasai community, meeting the people who have stewarded this landscape for centuries
Night game drives not available inside the main reserve
Walking safaris with a Maasai guide
Long evenings at camp, with the sounds of the African bush around you
If travel dates align with the Great Migration river crossings (typically July through October), Jennifer will time this portion of the itinerary to maximize the chance of witnessing one.

Day 11
Fly to Nairobi, then onward to Tanzania
A flight back to Nairobi connects to Kilimanjaro or Arusha, depending on scheduling. One night near Arusha before crossing deeper into northern Tanzania the following morning. The transition from Kenya to Tanzania marks a shift in landscape: the Tanzanian highlands and the world's most intact volcanic caldera lie ahead.

Days 12 - 13
Ngorongoro Highlands, Tanzania
Two nights in the Ngorongoro Highlands region.
The highlight is a full descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the few places in Africa where you are likely to have sightings of the Big Five in a single day. The crater floor, a self-contained ecosystem of roughly 260 square kilometers, supports an extraordinary density of wildlife within its walls.
The cooler highland air, the elevation, and the contrast to the open plains of Kenya make this one of the most distinctive parts of the entire journey.

Days 14 - 15
The Serengeti, Tanzania
A final flight brings you into the Serengeti for two nights, and the camp placement here is one of the most important decisions in the itinerary. The Serengeti ecosystem is vast, and the Great Migration moves through different areas at different times of year. Jennifer chooses the exact camp based on your travel dates and the current position of the herds, ensuring you are in the right place at the right time.
Whether the wildebeest are calving on the southern plains in February, moving through the Western Corridor in June, or crossing the Mara River in high summer, the Serengeti delivers game viewing on a scale that is genuinely unmatched anywhere in Africa.

Day 16
Departure, or onward to Zanzibar
From the Serengeti, begin your journey home. Or, for those who want to end the trip with something entirely different, continue to the optional Zanzibar extension below.

Optional Extension
Mnemba Island, Zanzibar
If you have more time, I highly recommend adding three nights at &Beyond Mnemba Island off the northeast coast of Zanzibar. It is a private island escape and a perfect way to end the trip with barefoot luxury, ocean views, and time to fully unwind after safari.
