Checked in, checked out: 6 European hotels I’ve actually stayed in

From a 100-year-old palace on Lake Annecy to a Sicilian masseria with bees that own the pool. What I loved, what made me laugh, and what I’d tell you before you book. Honest European luxury hotel reviews from a travel advisor who gushes about a hotel and gently roasts one quirky detail.

I stay at a lot of hotels. It’s literally my job. And I’ve realized that the most useful thing I can share isn’t a polished recommendation, it’s the honest truth about what it’s actually like to be there.

So I’m starting a new series: “Checked In, Checked Out.” Each edition, I’ll share hotels I’ve personally stayed in, what I loved most, and one memorable quirk that kept it real. Because no hotel stay is perfect, and honestly? The imperfect moments make the best stories.

First up: six European luxury hotels. Frescoed ceilings in Rome where a 200-year-old duke watches you sleep, a Sicilian Masseria where the bees think they own the pool, a rooftop in Barcelona that made me consider relocating, a Budapest hotel so moody the spa could double as a movie set, a Lake Geneva resort good enough for the G7 Summit, and a French palace on Lake Annecy where the views stopped me mid-breath but the AC didn’t quite keep up.

Let’s get into it.

Le Palace de Menthon, Lake Annecy, France

Checked In:

Corner suite views so gorgeous I basically stopped breathing. Over 100 years of history and you feel like royalty, minus the crown. The setting on Lake Annecy is the kind of beautiful that makes you question all your previous vacation choices.

Checked Out:

The AC. Pretty sure it was also installed 100 years ago. Very vintage, very French, very… sweaty chic.

Best for: Couples and families who want a grand European lake hotel with history, views, and easy access to the Alps and Switzerland. Pairs beautifully with a broader France itinerary or a Switzerland extension.

The ONE Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain

Photo©: Olegana Travel Boutique & The ONE Barcelona

Checked In:

The location? Absolutely perfect, walkable, central, and buzzing with that Barcelona energy that makes you feel instantly cooler than you are. Breakfast? One of the best. Truly elite. The kind of breakfast that makes you judge every future breakfast for the rest of your life. The rooftop pool? A complete vibe, stylish, sunny, and prime for pretending you live there full-time.

Checked Out:

The room layout… is a journey. You enter directly into what is basically a walk-in closet with sinks. Before the actual bedroom. And the sliding door situation? If you open a closet, you literally can’t get into the bedroom. The door that opens the closet closes the bedroom. It’s like staying inside an escape room designed by a minimalist architect who wanted to test your patience. Great hotel. Very confusing floor plan. Bring logic skills.

Best for: Couples who want a central Barcelona base with a stunning rooftop and world-class breakfast. Perfect for a city break before heading to the Costa Brava, the Pyrenees, or our Barcelona group trip.

Kozmo Hotel, Budapest, Hungary

Once home to a telecommunications company, this grand building still buzzes with history, only now it hums luxury. The rooms are spacious (a European miracle), with modern touches, beautiful terraces, and incredible city views. Lunch at Kozmo Restaurant was a standout: inventive dishes spanning Asia to Europe, and of course, a perfect Hungarian lecso. Everything about the stay felt elegant, thoughtful, and quietly indulgent.

Checked Out:

The design mood definitely leans… dark. Hallways with black walls and dim lighting, plus a spa that could double as a mysterious movie set. Gorgeous, yes but a little “luxury meets Addams Family.” I half expected Morticia to hand me a towel.

Best for: Couples who want a grand Budapest hotel with excellent dining, spacious rooms, and a design-forward aesthetic. Budapest itself is one of Europe’s most underrated luxury city breaks.

Masseria della Volpe, Noto, Sicily

Checked In:

A serene slice of Sicilian countryside. The masseria is a beautifully restored farmhouse full of rustic charm, stone walls, peaceful courtyards, fruit orchards, and that slow, golden Sicilian light. The restaurant is phenomenal (fresh, local, unforgettable), and the entire place radiates calm sophistication. It’s the kind of spot that makes you want to write a novel or at least pretend you’re in one.

Checked Out:

The bees by the pool. Let’s just say the local pollinators were thriving and very committed to joining us for aperitivo hour. Nature, 1. Humans, 0.

Best for: Couples and families who want a boutique Sicilian countryside retreat near Noto, with exceptional food and the kind of peace you can’t find in a city hotel. Pairs perfectly with a Syracuse and Val di Noto itinerary.

Royal Évian Resort, Évian-les-Bains, France

Photo©: Olegana Travel Boutique

Checked In:

Quiet, peaceful, and totally top notch. Incredible food, flawless service, and a fun concept, restaurants (and even a casino!) that are part of the resort but spread across town. Évian-les-Bains itself is a gem: right on Lake Geneva, perfect for exploring Switzerland while paying in Euros.

Checked Out:

France just announced the 2026 G7 Summit will be held right here at Hôtel Royal. The resort will be closed during the summit but honestly, if it’s good enough for heads of state, you know it’s top shelf the rest of the year.

Best for: Couples and families who want a luxury French lake resort with spa, golf, and easy access to both the French and Swiss sides of Lake Geneva. An excellent choice for a multi-country European itinerary.

Palazzo Roma, Rome, Italy

Photo©: Olegana Travel Boutique

Checked In:

This is hands down the most royal I’ve ever felt in my life. Frescoes on the ceilings, grand staircases, antique furniture… even the walls whisper “you don’t belong here but welcome anyway.” It’s like sleeping inside a history book (but with room service).

Checked Out:

The portraits in the rooms. Gorgeous artwork, yes. But nothing says “sweet dreams” quite like a 200-year-old duke staring at you from above the bed.

Best for: Couples who want the most dramatic, historically immersive hotel experience in Rome. If you’ve done the sleek modern Rome hotels and want something that feels like a private palace, this is it.

Why a travel advisor’s hotel knowledge matters

Anyone can search “best hotels in Barcelona” and get a list. What you can’t get from Google is someone who’s slept in the room, eaten the breakfast, navigated the confusing floor plan, and knows whether the AC was installed this century.

That’s what I bring to every trip I design. Not just recommendations, real knowledge. The right hotel, the right room, the right time of year. And the honesty to tell you when something looks beautiful online but doesn’t quite deliver in person.

Anna Fishman is the visionary and soulful force behind Olegana Travel Boutique, orchestrating transformative journeys where meticulously curated adventures meet authentic connection and exquisite, bespoke exploration.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Every single one. I don’t review hotels from press materials or sponsored trips. These are properties I’ve personally experienced, and my reviews reflect what I actually saw, ate, and slept in.

  • Masseria della Volpe in Sicily for countryside romance. Palazzo Roma for grand, dramatic luxury. Le Palace de Menthon for lake views that take your breath away. It depends on the style of honeymoon you want, I can help match it.

  • Le Palace de Menthon and Royal Évian are both excellent for families. Masseria della Volpe works well for families who want a quieter countryside experience. The city hotels (Barcelona, Budapest, Rome) can work for families but are best suited to couples.

  • Absolutely, that’s exactly what I do. I design bespoke European itineraries that pair the right hotel with the right destination, the right pacing, and the right experiences. Every detail handled so you can focus on enjoying the trip.
