Luxury England and Scotland family vacation: castles, gardens and the Cotswolds, 10 days

Scottish Borders  •  Northumberland  •  Cotswolds  •  London

The road south of Edinburgh unspools into the Scottish Borders, and within forty minutes the city is gone. What replaces it is something quieter and more cinematic: rolling sheep pastures, ruined abbeys on hilltops, and stone villages where the river curves through the middle of town. Your driver slows so the kids can see the first castle of the trip rising in the distance. This is the moment England and Scotland start to feel like the places they always promised to be in the storybooks. This is the trip I love designing most for families.

Over the next ten days, you'll move from the Scottish Borders to the medieval drama of Alnwick, then south to the honey-stone villages of the Cotswolds, and finally into London for a grand-finale flourish. Along the way you'll take afternoon tea in the same walled garden where Queen Victoria sipped hers in 1867, eat lunch in a treehouse restaurant suspended in the canopy above Alnwick Garden, walk through the famous Poison Garden, get behind-the-scenes access at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, take a private pre-opening tour of Blenheim Palace, and end the trip with cocktails at London's Sky Garden after a full day at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Your kids will recognize Alnwick Castle the moment they see it. It doubled as Hogwarts.

Every detail is handled: the private transfers, the local guides who know which gate to enter and which queue to skip, the boutique hotels, the restaurant reservations, the rail tickets, the route. You just show up and live it. The pacing is calibrated for families with curious kids and grandparents traveling together, with built-in downtime where you need it. Picture yourselves here. Tell me what your family loves, and I'll design the rest. Start with the planning form below.

How many days do you need for a luxury UK family vacation?

Ten days is the sweet spot for a luxury England and Scotland family trip that covers castles, gardens, the Cotswolds, and London without feeling rushed. This allows two nights in the Scottish Borders, two in Northumberland, three in the Cotswolds, and two in London. If you have fourteen days, I'd add the Lake District for hiking and Beatrix Potter country, or two extra nights in London for theater, Kew Gardens, and a day trip to Bath.

Your day-by-day itinerary

This sample itinerary was designed around England and Scotland's most compelling family experiences: storybook castles, world-class gardens, and the rolling countryside that inspired everything from Harry Potter to Downton Abbey. It's here to inspire, not to lock you in. You might pick a few pieces and let me build something different around them. Your trip is yours, and we'll customize every detail until it fits.

Who this trip is perfect for

Families with kids 8 and up.

The castles, the Poison Garden, the Treehouse Restaurant, the Harry Potter scenes at Alnwick: this trip is built for curious kids who love history and adventure, with none of the talking-down energy of a children's tour. Older teens love it just as much as the eight-year-olds.

Multigenerational groups traveling together.

Three generations under one itinerary will find the pacing comfortable, with a mix of guided experiences and built-in downtime. Grandparents and grandchildren alike will remember the private pre-opening at Blenheim and cocktails together at the Sky Garden.

This isn't a greatest-hits rush through London. It's a ten-day immersion into the England and Scotland that most travelers never reach, with private access, local guides, and dining experiences you can't book on your own.

Best time to visit England and Scotland

May through early July is the ideal window for this itinerary. The gardens at Hidcote, Alnwick, and Chelsea are in full bloom, daylight stretches past 9 PM, and landmark events like the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in late May bring London alive. Temperatures sit comfortably in the 60s and low 70s, with cool evenings that still call for a light jacket. I'd recommend booking this window six to nine months ahead, especially for Chelsea Flower Show dates.

September and early October offer a quieter, more golden version of the trip. Crowds thin out after the August holidays, the light turns rich and low across the Cotswold hills, and harvest-season dining hits its peak. Temperatures cool into the 50s and 60s. This window is wonderful for families who can travel outside school holidays, or for multigenerational groups who want a calmer pace.

Off-season travel from November through March has its own magic, especially in London at Christmas, with the lights on Regent Street, the markets at Hyde Park, and pantomime season at the theaters. The Scottish Borders and Cotswolds in winter are atmospheric and quiet, though some country properties close for January refurbishment. I'll match your trip to the time of year that works best for your family.

Let's design your UK family trip!

Every itinerary I build starts with a conversation. Tell me what excites your family, the ages of your kids, and the kind of trip you've always wanted to give them, and I'll take it from there.

Frequently asked questions

  • A custom ten day England and Scotland family itinerary at this level of access and accommodation typically starts around $35,000 to $50,000 for a family of four, depending on travel dates, room configurations, and any add-ons. I provide a detailed proposal after our planning call so there are no surprises.

  • Ten days is the right length for the route in this sample, covering the Scottish Borders, Northumberland, the Cotswolds, and London without feeling rushed. Twelve to fourteen days gives you room to add the Lake District, Edinburgh proper, or extra time in London for museums and theater.

  • No. Private transfers, private guided day trips, and a first-class rail leg are all included. A rental car can be added if your family wants the flexibility to explore the Cotswolds independently, but it isn't necessary.

  • Always. This sample is a starting point. Your trip will be built from scratch based on your family's interests, the ages of your kids, the pace you prefer, and your budget. Every experience, hotel, and route is customizable.

  • Families with children aged 8 and up tend to get the most out of this itinerary, since the castles, gardens, and behind-the-scenes tours land best with kids old enough to remember them. I regularly adapt UK trips for families with younger children by adjusting pacing, adding more downtime, and swapping in family-friendly dining.

  • I focus on the on-the-ground experience: hotels, transfers, tours, dining, and logistics. I'm happy to advise on flight timing and routing into Edinburgh and out of London, and I work with a trusted flight specialist for complex bookings if needed.

  • Yes. Travel insurance is quoted separately through Travel Guard once the trip is built, and I strongly recommend it for any international trip at this level of investment, especially for families.

  • Six to nine months ahead is ideal for peak season (May through July), especially if you want Chelsea Flower Show dates or specific hotels in the Cotswolds. Shoulder season trips (September and October) can usually come together in three to four months. The earlier we start, the more we can secure at the best properties.
