Tips for staying safe while exploring the world
Guest blog post from Felicity Leo
Safety meets adventure
Whether it’s your first solo trip or your tenth, there’s something magical about finally being in the moment. Traveling puts us in a euphoric state—mentally and physically immersed in the beauty of the journey. It’s one of the best feelings ever!
From the moment you start dreaming about that one bucket list destination that's been calling your name, to planning every detail—picking out fun outfits, breaking in comfy walking shoes, RSVPing for local tours and excursions—every step builds excitement.
Along with all the excitement and anticipation, staying mindful as a female traveler means taking steps to protect yourself—and it doesn’t take away from the fun. You can absolutely have an unforgettable travel experience, and keep safety as one of your top priorities.
Trust your instincts — it’s your best guide
Staying aware of your surroundings—even while exploring the gorgeous cities and villages of Italy or cruising across the breathtaking Caribbean Sea—helps you enjoy the adventure with confidence and peace of mind. Utilize the smart safety habits you already rely on in your everyday life. That awareness adds an important layer of assurance you’ll be incredibly grateful for later.
Always listen to that inner voice—trusting your gut instincts. If something feels off, it probably is. Even the most beautiful destinations can have deserted corners or unfamiliar alleys. When in doubt, choose a more public, well-lit route. For instance, nighttime in a city like Paris or Venice is magnificent and adds a special ambiance to your trip. Enjoying the nightlife safely is all about knowing your surroundings and planning your return.
If you need to get somewhere, use trusted transport services and for extra peace of mind, you can even ask your hotel to arrange a driver for you.
Keeping in touch is a total vibe
Back in the day, when I was touring through France, I kept in touch with family and friends by sending postcards — yep, those 4x5 snapshots of touristy spots that I’d stamp and slide into the cutest little mailboxes I could find. Today, it’s easier than ever to stay connected.
Share your itinerary ahead of time and check in regularly via FaceTime, WhatsApp, Facebook, or apps like Google Maps and Find My Friends.
How fun is it to share your travel stories over a video call? It’s a fantastic way to stay close and a quick, simple way to let loved ones know you’re safe—even when you’re far away! To keep the fun going, always carry a portable charger with you and consider getting a local SIM card or an international plan to ensure you’re always reachable. And, as always, stay aware of your surroundings while you’re on your phone.
Research destinations
Before you go, do a little research on the local culture, the safest areas to visit, and the common travel scams you need to be aware of. This preparation is a great way to feel empowered and confident as you venture into new destinations.
Familiarizing yourself with cultural norms, public transportation options, and even learning a few basic phrases in the local language (like “hello,” “thank you,” etc.) can go a long way.
It’s also a good idea to know the location of the American Embassy or consulate in the area — in case you need assistance during your travels. Along the same lines, keep digital copies of important documents on your phone or in cloud storage, so you’re prepared if anything gets lost. (I also make a paper copy of my passport to carry with me and leave the original locked in the hotel safe.) Using anti-theft bags, money belts, or hidden pouches can help store your valuables securely.
Finding your tribe - connect and explore
Women solo and group trip communities can provide amazing safety tips and a sense of camaraderie. Whether online or in person, it’s incredible to share experiences and connect with others who have the same mindset. Plus, you might even find travel buddies for parts of your trip, so you’re never truly alone.
When I visited Greece, I took a solo bus trip to a nearby village. After giving up my empty seat beside me to a couple so they could sit together, I was welcomed into a new seat next to a female solo traveler—who turned out to be from Athens. We hit it off immediately (her English was way better than my Greek!) with great conversation about life in Greece and awesome recommendations for eating, shopping, and touring. I had an amazing local experience and made a new friend, who I still keep in touch with today.
Solo travel doesn’t have to feel intimidating.
Stay safe, stay confident, and enjoy the adventure!
