Luxury Greece travel: Athens, the Cyclades, Crete, & beyond

Greece is really two trips, and most people try to make them one.

There is the Greece of Santorini and Mykonos, which is genuinely beautiful and genuinely busy, and which works if you go at the right time of year and stay on the right part of the island. And there is the other Greece: Naxos, Paros, Folegandros and the smaller Cyclades, where the pace drops, the prices drop with it, and the food is often better. Athens has quietly become one of the more interesting cities in Europe to give two or three days to, and almost nobody does. Crete is large enough to be a holiday on its own.

Greece comes down to logistics more than almost anywhere I work, and logistics is where these trips go wrong. Which ferry routes are reliable and which will strand you, and when a short flight is worth paying for instead. Which side of Santorini to stay on, because the caldera view costs you the beach and most people only discover that on arrival. How many islands is too many, and the answer is almost always one fewer than people plan. Which private boat days earn their cost. And when to go, because June and September are a different country from August.

Below are the two Greece trips I build most often, one for travelers who want the famous islands and one for those who would rather be somewhere quieter. They are starting points, not scripts. If what you want is not here, Athens and the Peloponnese, a sailing week, Crete on its own, a honeymoon, or Greece paired with Italy, tell me on our call and I will design it from scratch.
