Shhhhh…..It’s top secret! While everyone loves Europe in the summer, there’s a way to beat the crowds and busy season prices.

Fall can be a much calmer, relaxing time to travel and undoubtedly one of THE BEST times to visit lovely European destinations like Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Croatia.

Lisbon, Portugal
If you want to leave busy summer travel behind – head to Europe in September, October, or November. Here are some of the best reasons to do just that, and some ideas to get your planning started!
3 ideas for your next European getaway:
Portugal
Lisbon is a popular destination for foodies, couples, and families with kids (my family and I LOVED it here when we visited!).
Throw on those comfortable shoes and enjoy walking the hilly cobblestone streets that spread throughout Lisbon. The downtown part of Lisbon is located in the upper part of the city, and then .“old” historic part is closer to the water and the tourist attractions. One attraction you won’t want to miss in Lisbon is the Avenida da Liberdade – its very large and broad avenue that connects the “new” and the “old” parts of the city!
Once you’ve seen what you want to see in Lisbon, there are so many other places to visit in Portugal like Sintra, Cabo da Roca, Porto, the Douro Valley, Evora, Obidos, Nazare, and more. The list goes on and on!

Spain
If you’ve been to Madrid and Barcelona, why not pay a visit to the south of Spain and check out places like Seville, Malaga and Córdoba?
Known as Andalusia, this part of Spain is a large, beautiful region of rolling hills, rivers and lush farmland bordering Spain’s southern coast. It was under Moorish rule from the 8th-15th centuries, a legacy that’s evident in the region’s architecture.
Don’t miss the famous landmarks like the Alcázar Castle in Seville, Córdoba’s Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral, and Granada’s Alhambra Palace.

Croatia
Once the summer beach crowds are gone, Croatia loses none of its appeal and charms in the fall. Enjoy nature in Plitvice Lakes park, which takes on gorgeous fall colors as the temperatures drop before the first snow fall.
Take a walk through the historic medieval streets of Dubrovnik to enjoy incredible views of the terra cotta Mediterranean roofs and cliffs overlooking the sea. Grab a delicious gelato and enjoy a quiet afternoon.
Take a ferry ride to Korcula to visit the home and museum of Marco Polo, the world’s most famous traveler. In Split, visit one of its many museums and galleries or just walk around Old Town.
